Candle Making Classes

Are you interested in learning how soy candles are made?

Would you like to enjoy a fun couple of hours making candles with a few friends?

We offer candle making classes in your home* or in ours.  We charge a very small class fee of $25.00 for 1 participant or $20/person for 2 or more participants.  Cost includes one self-made candle to take home.  Additional candles can be made for extra cost.

We offer a variety of unique and fun containers to choose from that are not pictured on this site and offer a variety of containers.  Each participant is allowed their choice of container.

During the wax cooling times, prior to pouring candles and right after pouring, I would be happy to share with the participants of the class some of the many uses of essential oils for health and healing.

Contact us for more information and to schedule a convenient time.

*If your home is further than a 20 mile radius from Loveland, CO, there will be an additional trip charge.  That charge will be dependent on the distance and length of time I have to travel in order to arrive at the class location.

Cinnamon Apple Slices

Tonight I made 2 1/2 pounds of the wonderful fragrance called Cinnamon Apple Slices.  Wow!  It's awesome.  No wonder it's a candle lover's favorite.  This scent is great for the holiday season or any other time.  I poured tonight's batch into some of the jars that I had not taken pictures of yet.  Tomorrow, I hope to have pictures of all our most common jars completely taken and posted here.

Soy Candle Burning Tips

For excellent candle burning, please follow these very important tips:

* If the candle was just recently made, please allow it to cure for a minimum of 72 hours (and up to a week) prior to lighting it for the first time.  This will assure that you get the best scent throw from the candle.
* Never leave a candle unattended while it is burning.
* Trim the wick to ¼ of an inch before every use.  If the wick is not properly trimmed, smoking can occur, black soot may form on the candle, and the flame may become too large and hazardous.
* If the wick is trimmed too short, it may not stay lit.  In that case, gently dig out a small circle of wax from around the wick before trying to relight it.
* Do not leave the wick trimmings in the candle.  Remove them prior to lighting.
* Never throw matches into the candle.
* Allow a complete melted wax pool to form in your candle prior to extinguishing.  Do not light your candle if there will not ample time to allow that complete pool to form.  Candles will create a “memory pool” as they are burned.  If a candle is put out too early, before a full melt pool is created, the candle will “remember” this and it will have difficulty creating a full pool in the future.  This will cause a core burn down the center, leaving a lot of wax around the edges, and reducing the scent throw and burning time of the candle.  A good rule of thumb to follow is to allow around 1 hour of burn time for each inch of diameter of the container.  For example, allow 3 hours for a 3-inch diameter container.
* Burn in a draft free area, clear of combustible materials like curtains, books, baskets, etc.  Drafts can cause smoking and uneven burning.
* Burn in a well-ventilated room.
* Always set the candles on a level, stable surface.
* Do not try to move a burning candle from one area to another once the wax is liquid.
* Do not blow the candle out.  Use a wick dipper to put out the flame to prevent smoking and disrupting the lovely scent the candle has created.  Use the dipper to gently dip the wick into the wax and immediately lift it back up.  There will not be any smoke and your wick will be primed and ready to go for the next lighting.

*Do not use the container's lid to extinguish your candle.  Some of our lids are wooden or have plastic parts which could catch on fire.  Putting the flame out in this manner also causes smoke to build up inside your candle making it turn to an ugly gray color.
* Do not burn candle more than 4 hours.
* Always let the wax completely solidify prior to trimming the wick and relighting the candle.
* Soy candles may look a little bumpy on the top after burning.  This is a natural characteristic of soy wax.
* Discontinue burning the candle when ¼-½ inch of wax is left at the bottom.  Do not burn until there isn’t any wax left because it may cause the jar to become so hot that it will crack.
* Avoid exposing the candle to extreme temperatures.  Do not freeze the candle or leave in an extremely hot area such as in direct sunlight or in a car.
* Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets.
* For more candle safety information see the National Candle Association website.

Differences Between Paraffin and Soy Wax

In this post we will provide a few more details in some of the differences between paraffin wax and soy wax.
About 90% of the candles sold in stores today are made of paraffin wax or a paraffin wax blend.  Paraffin wax is a hydrocarbon which comes from crude oil—a limited natural resource.  Crude oil is taken to refineries where it is refined and turned into various products.  One of these products is called lubricating oil.  Lubricating oil is refined into three different waxes; one being petroleum wax.  Paraffin is derived from this petroleum wax.
Soy wax is made from pure soybeans—a renewable resource.  The wax is derived from the oil of the soybeans.  After harvest, the beans are cleaned, cracked, de-hulled, and made into flakes.  Oil is extracted from the flakes and hydrogenated.  This hydrogenation process alters the melting point of the oil causing it to be solid at room temperature.  Leftover bean husks from the soybeans are usually fed to animals.  United States farmers grow the greatest majority of soybeans.
While paraffin wax creates great pillar candles and exhibits vibrant colors, it also burns hotter and provides a lesser burn time.  It is also very difficult to clean up.  I’d almost rather throw away a container that has held paraffin wax than spend the extra time and effort trying to clean it up.
While soy wax is a softer wax and performs best in containers, it burns at a lower temperature and provides a longer burning candle.  It is very easy to clean up because it is made from vegetable oil.  Warm, soapy water does the trick right away, and you are left with a container that is reusable again and again.
Some people say that paraffin wax will have a better scent throw; however, I disagree.  I have burned both types.  The soy candles we make have an excellent scent throw comparable to the best paraffin candle I have burned in the past.
There is a current debate whether burning a paraffin wax candles exudes carcinogens into the air or not.  I prefer not to get into that debate.  And I do not wish to say things against paraffin or for soy wax beyond what I fully understand at the current time.  However, I do logically consider the simple fact that paraffin is a petroleum by-product and soy wax comes from a natural vegetable source.  Plus, I am helping the livelihood of United States farmers.

About Our Candles

In this post, we will give more thorough information about the wax, wicks, containers, and scents we use in our candles.
The soy wax is made from pure soybean oil made in the USA from domestically grown crops.  The use of soy wax supports our American farmers.  In addition, it is a natural and biodegradable wax, manufactured according to FDA standards.  It is also Kosher certified and not tested on animals.  Our natural wax does not contain any palm wax, petroleum, paraffin, or beeswax products.  It does not contain any pesticides or herbicides, toxic materials or Genetically Modified Material (GMO’s).  It is safe and non-toxic, burns at a cooler temperature, and cleans up easily with soap and warm water.  Soy wax is a renewable source which can be continually produced without damaging the ecosystem.
Our wicks are specifically made to complement natural soy wax.  They are coreless cotton wicks braided with thin paper filaments interwoven for burn stability.  The wicks have been primed with vegetable wax, instead of paraffin wax, making them a natural burning wick.
The majority of the scents we offer are synthetic fragrances.  However, we also make aromatherapy candles scented with 100% pure, high quality essential oils.  If you are looking for a completely natural candle with added health benefits, look no further than our aromatherapy candles.  Beware of any candle companies advertising that they make their candles with "all natural" fragrance oils when they are selling candles that smell like baking scents and such things.  As far as we have searched high and low, we have yet to find any all natural fragrance oils that can smell like Apple Pie, Banana Nut Bread, or Maple Syrup.  We want you to know the truth that the most natural fragrances that can be put into a candle come from 100% pure essential oils.
All of our candles are made without the use of added color, leaving them to exhibit the natural white color of the soy wax.  This keeps our candles more natural—which is one of our goals.  If you order a candle and desire color added to it, we can certainly do it.  However, we would like you to know that soy wax absorbs color differently than paraffin wax.  Due to its natural properties, colored soy wax candles will exhibit mostly a pastel color.  The color will not typically come out very deep or bright.
Our containers are all made of heat resistant glass and include a decorative lid.  We offer containers in 4, 8, 10, 16, and 26 ounce sizes.  The 4 and 8 ounce containers include a glass lid.  We have a beautiful selection of flat and bubble shaped glass lids, rustic colored metal lids, and wood lids to fit our 10, 16, and 26 ounce containers.  We believe in recycling, so once your candle is finished burning, rinse your container out with warm, soapy water and return it to us for a refill.  We will deduct $.75-$2.00 off the cost of the refill candle, depending on the size of container used.  We also accept heat resistant containers that you may already have on hand and make your candle in that container offering the same price discount.  Please note, not all heat resistant containers will make a good candle; it will depend on the shape and size.  But we are more than happy to take a look at your container, and if we can make a candle out of it, we will.
For a finishing, decorative touch we tie a ribbon, natural jute cord, or latigo lace cord around the candle attaching to it a small card with information on the scent and size of the candle.
If you have any questions about our candles that are not explained here, please do not hesitate to ask.  Thanks for reading.

About Us

I have been a candle lover for a long time.  In 2008, some friends introduced us to soy candles.  I had not heard much about soy candles and did not even realize that the candles I usually purchased were made from paraffin wax.  I never thought twice about what was in the candles I often lit all around my home.  When our friends taught us about the natural properties of soy wax and the benefits of burning a natural soy wax candle with a natural wick, I was hooked.  Not only did I never purchase another paraffin wax candle, I began making my own soy candles.
We have been a one income home schooling family for the past 13 years and, with the continued increase in the cost of living and expenses, I thought that it would be a great and fun opportunity to begin my own soy candle business.  Not only would I enjoy making healthier candles for myself at a lower cost, but I would also help bring some much needed additional income into our household.  I did a lot of research, made an investment into all the supplies needed, and had trial and error lessons making the initial candles.
This fall of 2010, I have been re-inspired to pursue candle making with more passion and determination and am trying to get the word out about our business by having a Facebook page and this blog.
All of our candles are carefully hand-made.  No factory type mass production takes place in our home.  Our wax, wicks, scents, and containers are also carefully selected.  We want to offer the best product we can to our customers.  If at any time you are not satisfied with our candles, please do not hesitate to let us know immediately.  We want to make it right.  If you are very pleased with our candles, we’d also like to hear from you.
We understand that candle buying is often something done on an impulse as one is walking by the scented aisle at the store, but my hope is that you will consider the lower quality and higher price of the candle on that aisle and instead contact us.  We would be thrilled and grateful to have your business and to have the opportunity to design and make a candle especially created according to your choice of scent and container.
Thank you for reading and for considering the purchase of our candles.  We greatly appreciate your business!
